Pirate Skies

One of those sail ship kites regularly seen on the beaches
in Kuta, Denpasar and Seminyak in Bali.
Not a hallucination from too much weed or Jungle Juice. Another great way to have wholesome family fun in Bali. Launching it into the air takes some skill though. Unless you're an immature Jedi with a kite fetish...

Padang-Padang, Bali

The Padang- Padang beach
While at my stay in Bingin i took an approximately 30 minute walk over to the Padang- Padang beach furher down the road. Meaning 'many fields' in Bahasa Indonesia or Malay  I couldnt see any fields at all but it seemed like a quiet little beach town. It had chic little boutiques and some cafes and many little chalets and resorts offering surfing lessons. Board rentals were also available. It's about a 40 minute drive from the airport, located on the south western end at the tip of the Bali.

The I Love Bali outlet which i believe has a couple of shops in Bali
Healthy organic food for the hippie in you. wait, am not sure if they offer a reefer with your soy latte though..
I wondered into some empty land which had some trails snaking beyond short trees and brush...
... and discovered this cosy little glen overlooking the ocean.

Of course i didnt have much time to explore more of Padang Padang but its another one of those places that you go to get away from the madness that is Kuta. It strictly for lazing on the beaches, surfing, and just chilling away with a cold Bintang as you hear the sounds of the faraway ocean.

Bingin Beach, Bali

Fishermen waiting for that last catch of the day
Mention Bali and folks are thinking of partying at Bounty, surfing the mystical seas off sandy white shores, sipping wine in Seminyak, dining in the many lush resorts on cliffsides, romantic getaways in Ubud and possibly hooking up with surfers for some 'what happens in Bali stays in Bali' action.

I've been moving about on my many trips and over the last weekend i hit the surfer beach colony at Bingin Beach about 40 minutes away from the Denpasar airport. Yes, i have the surfing prowess of a pregnant camel but this was more for Project Coconut (more to be revealed soon) then to actual ride any waves.

A nice mix of folks, young kids, local fishermen and surf bunnies.
Some of the pictures here taken from cliffsides are a bit blur as i didnt have a zoom and had to blow up the pics to show you the shots that i wanted so bear with me. The wide angle shots are cool as that was taken with the Nikon D7000.

Bingin Beach is a charmer. Lets cut to the chase, it just for those who want to get away from the frantic madness of traffic and tourists in Kuta and the pretentiousness of Seminyak. You're here just to surf and take in the sun on a beach that is no frills but is magic nontheless. You're here if you just want to spend time away from people, read that book in a cosy surfer shack, eat fried noodles and chug down cold beers in a little 'warung' that over looks the startling blue Indian Ocean.

You're here to experience the magic that is a sparkling expanse of liquid diamonds that is the ocea spread out in front of you, the same ocean that greets you in all its deep azure majesty in the mornings and transforms into a velvety blackness that crashes onto the rocky shores in the still of the night, a calming lullaby as you drift away to have a Bintang with Morpheus of the Endless.

It the mid afternoon the sea's an expanse of glittering silver. The surf is crashing onto
the hard rocks  while some hardy surfers and swimmers brave the heat
When you take your time exploring there's always something to see. You appreciate the intricasies of your surroundings - buildings, architecture, the sounds of the chirping birds that greet you at dawn, smell of the sea and that fresh cup of Bali coffee in front of you, the little trails and paths that lead away to potential mini adventures.

Thats what i found here. I just took my time and wandered around the beach and the surrounding neighborhood of Bingin beach. I dont get that in Kuta and Seminyak. What you see there is what you get. Folks out for a good time. Folks content to entertain their own thoughts. Wandering around the lesser developed spots in any country can only leave you with a sense of discovery.

Unless its you harshly discovering how good Thai plastic surgeries are on what you thought was a woman sitting on your lap in downtown Bangkok. (um.. this happened to a friend of mine Girlfriend of Chindi. Serious)

The Nyoman and Nyoman Cafe, the furthest cafe on the side of the surfer colony

This was a short trip so after landing around noon I just chilled out at the shack for a while then headed down to get some food at the local warung. The view from every of these little stalls is great. the one's higher up offer majestic view of the ocean, something you're not going to get in Kuta or Seminyak or Nusa Dua or Lovina. The food is decent and the servings are generous. On average it cost me about 30,000 RP (approx USD3 for a beer, and about 50,000 (just under USD6 bucks for a plate of fried rice, a small bottle of mineral water and a coke). This just gives you and idea of the prices.

Another stall further up from Nyoman (i forget to jot down the name)
The warungs are also a great place to just chill and read (BUT be careful of the monkeys who have a tendency to grab your spectacles or stuff) DONT leave shit lying around.

They are many warungs on the colony and its also a great place to meet folks and chat if you're the more socialble type. The surfers are more laid back and unassuming. Many of the local expats also hang out in Bingin to surf or just to hang out by the beach as a getaway from the main towns.

Part of Bingin beach. Walking further ahead takes you to the Klapa dining complex
A lone fishermen surveying for catch

This walk itself should be enjoyed as during the low tide in the afternoon and evening, the sea weed covered rocks gel beaitufully with the rocks and coral and white sandy beaches. Some fishermen scour the shallow waters for small fish while you pass huge boulders and rocks as the surf reaches out to you with white frothy fingers.

The public area of the Klapa beach
I then hit the beach above and made my way to the Klapa dining complex which sits on the old Wonderland piece of land. Its about a 15 minute slow walk along the beach and is a more busy touristy crowd ie loud Chinese tourists, loud local kids, fat white dude and his slim little local girlfriend in her string bikini lounging by the pool etc.

The beach is a public area but you need to pay RP100,000(approx usd10) to get into Klapa which can be redeemed for food and drinks inside. Sorta cover charge. oh btw, GO NOW - there's a San Miguel promotion that gets you about 7 beers for your RP100,000! Yes, i was one happy camper...

Part of the outdoor dining area and infinity pool at Kelapa
If you're on an extended stay at Bingin you could hit Klapa for a couple of hours for a change of environment if you needed to. The beers were a lot cheaper during that promotion! I'll put up another post on Klapa in the near future.

Sunset from Bingin Beach
I head back to Bingin as the sun sets as the tide's moving in fast and I dont want to get cut off when the sea reclaims the sandy beach i had passed through just under 2 hours earlier. Buzzing from the beer, its a magic walk back. The blue skies and ocean are now tinged gold with the setting sun. the rocks and seaweed glistening in the the dusk and the need to sit down and enjoy the moment is only hastened by the rising tide. I head back to the shack, buzzing from the beer. The cold shower will wash off the sticky salty layer on my skin and Mick Foley's latest Countdown to Lockdown sits patiently for me in my backpack as night descends on Bingin.

The full moon over the ocean
Surfers waiting for the perfect wave at dawn
I wake up to a beautiful morning. The sea greets me as my groggy eyes adjust to the early morning sunshine that starts the day early here in Bali. I head down for a jaffle and coffee breakfast and then begin exploring the surfer colony and the surrounding neighborhood.

One of the yoga joints at Bingin. The other was the Mu Lodge.
The lead up to the Bingin cliff is made up of narrow roads that hug small patches of meadows, fields and small houses. Little side lanes take you to homes, temples, exclusive resorts and private residences owned by the wealthy.

The Doorway to Neptune's Kingdom. Or Aquaman's. or The Submariner's.

The hidden entrance to a small resort that was hidden between trees.

Some of the smaller paths leading to the a bunch of yoga retreats nearby.
The steep paths at the surfer colony and a sausage on legs
Along one of the paths i stumbled on this guy breeding cockerels for cock fighting tournaments
I just walked into one of the upper market resorts on the cliff side- I think this is the Temple Lodge's infinity pool.

An unfinished chalet on the surfer colony
Later in the evening I go pay a visit to some friends at the Hard Rock cafe in Kuta. Getting a cab back in the dark is a challenge as you've got to make sure your can driver know's exactly where Bingin Beach is and even that he might miss the little turning on the right to the beach or else he might head stright on to the adjacent Padang Padang beach. Just remember the small restaurant on the right just after the turning to the Bingin area.

This was a perfect 3 day 2 night trip. ALone time, a good book, a constant soundtrack of the ocean and birds. The expanse of night sky spottend by star light and the lamps from fishing boats. Great for those days when your gas tank for work is empty, you've just broken up with that asshole/crazy stalker ex., want to take some surfing lessons OR you just want to check out sculpted tanned surfer dudes and babes in all their bikini-ed glory (the women i mean. No Speedo wearing men here).

Anyone want to make a trip here let me know. I'll hook you up with some contacts folks. Have a great weekend ahead!

Coming Soon - Bingin Beach, Bali

The seaweed covered rocks at Bingin at sunset

Last weekend i spent checking out my little project in Bali. Its just a prelude to the main dream I have but which I cant afford at the moment. Just getting my feet wet as one might say.

Bingin Beach is off the crowded, party and sex hole that it Kuta, less family and stiff retirees or drunk Russians of Nusa Dua or the chic sophistication that is Seminyak. Essentially a surfer colony that's no frills and lying about 40 minutes from Denpasar airport.

Full update tomorrow folks. See you in a day! (thats is IF i'm not hung over tonight...)

I always forget...

My descent from the Batur volcano in the Kintamani district in Bali about 2 years ago (maybe more)
That descending a volcano is hot. Frakkin's HOT. With not much vegetation around the craters and you're normally getting your ass off the peak by around 9am to noon (depending on which volcano you're on) you're going to be steaming your balls in your underwear by the time you hit the bottom.

Anyway, I'm planning a 3 peak jaunt in Bali probably in mid July. Any takers? I normally travel alone but this time around i'd need some extra wallet power to share the transportation costs. Its basically a 5 day 4 night trip. We start off with the highest peak at Gunung Agung (5 hours to peak), followed by Gunung Abang (6 hours but slightly less steep) the next day and culminating in the easy Batur or the Batur caldera trek (very scenic and great for picnics). We head to town on day 4 to chill by some beach. Options here are open BUT i think we'll be needing some spa massages after that.

I'd like keep the group to 4 so anyone keen just holler.

HOTTEST Friends of Chindiana Awards 2012

Hottest Kaki Mamak - Da Pris - One of the very few AirAngels that don't run off screaming into the night at the sight of my constipated face boarding a flight. Have known this Klang babe for a while now and always willing to to follow me to at any dodgy mamak from Klang to Jalan Pudu!

Hottest Comic Book Geek - Acid Milk - one of the most cynical bloggers around. This geek wet dream comes with an impresive online comic book collection (illegally downloaded), the body of Wonder Woman (legally achieved with a gym membership) and some a talent for singing. I think she does have an invisible plane too.

Just a day older than me, she's another testament that age is nothing but a number. Toy flea market, cheap books on sale and tea with a babe. Life dont come better than this!

Hottest Sales Director - Farrah J - My old Banana Leaf Sunday kaki. Gets to market high end hotels to corporate giants. From the mountains to islands she's there getting those suits to exchange their lives for some chill out time in fresh air and soft sandy beaches. Farraaaah! On A Roof In Hanoi

The Rooftop, on the 19th floor of Pacific Place building in Hanoi, Vietnam

19 floors up and I'm typing this on my blackberry. Now here with me on this rooftop 19 floors high above the glowing gold lit streets of incandescent light. This is the chic new Hanoi, Mick Hucknall sings something over the speakersn the winds are strong up here and I've the the prime corner high table. The city of Hanoi glows in fluorescense and neons. Below me horns blare and hoot the annoying beeps of the motor bikes going toe to toe with the longer sustained impatience of the drivers of cars. Somewhere below the locals squat low at the pho' stalls, massages are administered, some with happy endings. Tired workers head home on bikes and buses. You are still here with me. Its only 830pm local time. My Tiger beer is getting warm. But the fresh Vietnamese springs rolls are refreshing. The quiet voices of the mainly couples out here on the wooden balcony contrast sharply to the louder conversations inside the loungy restaurant inside. Wait.. Beer getting warmer. Langkau would not approve.
It's funny how one starts dreaming whenever one see's a glowing golden road that disappears into the horizon. What?  you mean its only me? dammit...
Hanoi the administrative capital of Vietnam. Half the population of Saigon/Ho Chi Minh's 8 million. More political power but less commercial vibrancy. I'm not making sense. Fuck I can't even see what I'm typing. The small 'i ' looks like an ant's penis. Ooo some group aplauding something. Hmm maybe I'll see if I can score a free beer. Excuse folks...

Ambushed by Age

...... when hair keeps growing out of every crevice of your body no matter how often you try to trim those little fukers.

2. When you start reading the daily newspapers like your grandfather. (and you know its going to get worse)

3. Trying to replicate a coupla chapters from the Kama Sutra means at least 2 days medical leave.

4. You need words repeated to you because yes, your hearing is fucking following your eye sight on what looks like gradually longer holidays

5. You now have the alcohol drinking prowess of a 2 week old kitten (i had put 12 year old girl but realised it wouldn't be PC)

6. Questions like "will i outlive my savings?' haunt you like a Freddie Kruger wet dream

7. You start forgetting where you parked your car in malls (and you're not even a woman)

8. Related to the above, the memory in general is like a rusty sieve. You can remember your first baby steps but can't remember next week's meetings.

9. You're watching 'erotica' instead of 'porn'

10. IPhone, IPads, IGadgets mean as much to you as a study of dung beetles in Latin.

At least I still have my morning boners...

Kili In The Score

Just thought I'd share with you guys the short Kilimanjaro article I did for The Score Men's magazine that was distributed in Malaysia and Singapore in February. You guys can click to enlarge the articles to read them. I'm still hoping to do a longer version that will allow more of my brilliant drunken word play...

Surreal - Tupac at Coachella 2012

A hologram brings 'Pac back from the dead. What does this hold for the future? Dream concert - 'Pac, Jim Morrison, Hendrix with special appearance by Elvis?

Someday someone's going to tie this all back to "Jar Jar started this"...

You Are Here With Me... Batur Volcano

It's cold. VERY fucking cold. You're chuckling at me as I had totally miscalculated about the wind chill factor above the Batur volcano in the Kintamani district of the island of Bali. You're calling me a moron, saying that i look like a bedouin nomad with the hotel towel wrapped around me which i had before tied around my head to keep the cold away(what makes do when one underpacks )

Before us a magnificient sunrise births a panoramic wonderscape. The golden rays of the sun are now bouncing off the mists from the lake. The crowd around us are all in quiet murmurs. We're holding our packed breakfasts in our hands. a plastic cup with hot black Balinese coffee and a toasted banana sandwich and a full boiled egg are our comfort as we each munch quietly, each person on the volcano caught up in their own thoughts.

The same wind that is freezing my balls is the very same wind that is spreading the mists across the ancient crater. This world, this crazy beautiful magnificent world, that we walk on, breath in and steal, shoplift, save lives, forget to pay taxes (umm... yea you) just reaches out to us, you and I, sitting here on a barren volcano, it reaches us with a blanket of golden rays, streaming across the world, oceans, through jagged mountain tops and settling right in front of us, on temporary clouds of mist.

Hot coffee in a cheap plastic cup hasnt tasted this good in a long time.

My Fav Banksy Work...

Maybe its the whimsical cape, maybe its the fun that two mortal enemies can share, maybe its my yearning for simpler times...

Thursday, April 5, 2012

Well Hello THere....

I just found out that 'Dangh Nap' or something like that means 'Sign in' in Vietnamese. I'm sitting in the airport in Uncle Ho's City South of Hanoi. This is my fourth country in the last 9 days. My balls are sitting snug on Malaysia time while the rest of my body is shitting out a tango to Bangkok/Indonesia/Vietnamese time zones.

I've had a shit month. White hairs are growing on my testicles to complement the collection on my head. I've trying to get out of Dodge but the bosses keep telling me to hang on that extra week, month, year.

I'm on a knife's edge, a badass muthafucka waiting to bust a cap in some retard fuck's ass. I need a break, a beach, a beer on a beach while on a break. Or else.... someone gonna get hurt reeaaaal bad.

I've travelled and travelled and flown and i've ate and shat across continents. Talk about international digestion. England, Dubai, London, Liverpool, Manila, Clark, Jakarta, Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City, Singapore all in the past month. Done it all, bought those t-shirts but not having the legs of a flight attendant. (i have to say those new compression tops on those AirAsia girls are nice.)

My thoughts have not been my own. My brain has been filled by the convulated wordplay of legal documents, budgetary spreadsheets, angry phone calls, menopausing phone calls, angry menopausing sms', bbms' and whatsapppssssss. FUck me now stress attacks on multiple platforms! Not bad you versatile fuck...

mother fuck autosave failed ....mothe

CONTINUED April 6th 2012

OK so i'm back in KL and the worlds slightly better. Back on home turf with the team. Some semblance of normality pervails. That and the hangover from last night. Beers are the balm for the soul no?

One needs to live the life of a freedom loving hippie sprite instead of of a constipated Grinch. In the meantime I'm heading out for a foot massage, coffee in borders and possibly even head for a Thai massage session in the evening. Tapping into one's inner woman may have it's plus sides. I just need to understand this handbag shopping thing...

Sometimes.. this job has its perks

You are here with me. We're looking at this contract. We've just sent out a bunch of emails and we've got another two long emails to draft. One of which needs some thought on legal implications. After that I think I will head down to Warong Made's for a late lunch.

The morning rain lingers on the damp ground next to the swimming pool. The cold wind is refreshing after the early morning flight and cab ride to the hotel.

We've managed to cover half of Brock Lesnar's autubiography on the plane.

OOoohh the winds picked up. Hope it lasts for the meeting later with the client. He's just told me to come in shorts as he wants to have drinks outside. The beers should taste good on the beach near his home.

This will be a good work trip to Bali...

Superwomen and Breast Cancer Awareness

Somehow these ads from a Mozambique non profit organisation to spread awareness about breast cancer may not really reach out to to the female psyche as much as the nerd herd. Having these super women to be seen fondling their perfect super boobs will prob make a geek boy's wet dream. But i guess it did fulfill the objective of getting folks attention.
